A Brief History in Time :

My political career started during my student days, as KSU District and then State President. Here I was active in politics as well as fine arts
and social work. Youth Congress presidentship was my adolescence in Political life. It was Mrs. Indira Gandhi who guided me through
these years as a Mother does her teenaged son. Her love and affection is unforgettable. I have had the good fortune to carry Indiraji frail and light as she was, over the hot sands of the beach in my little village, Chombala, when she came there at my invitation to address a mammoth Youth Congress Rally. I also often recall how I used to insist upon her total attention whenever we were discussing matters across her office
table at 1 Safdarjung Road. She would continue her writing/repiles to the various matters before her and ask me to go on talking. But I
always insisted upon her full attention which she finally gave me by closing her pen any laying it down (sometimes not without a little
exasperation). The day I was deliberately ignored by the Senior Congress Leader at Cochin Airport when Indiraji was on her way to
Lakshdeep and the thoughtfulness with which she stepped back from the ladder of the flight only to console me and give strength is
unforgettable and has continued to give me strength to this day. His Excellency the Governor of Nagaland, Sri Shankara Narayanan,
was witness to this incident. I strongly believe that this deep attachment was mutual. As, late Moopanar (who was General Secretary
AICC in 1984) often told me, I had the good fortune to receive her final blessings. On her return from Bhubaneshwar that fateful evening
She had, despite the time being late, called for some specific files which she insisted upon attending and the last of them pertained to
one appointing me as General Secretary of KPCC, which she had promised me when I had been removed from the Youth Congress
Presidentship some time ago. The telegram of appointment and the message of her departure reached me in my remote village almost
simultaneously.

Just as I found a mother and guide in Indiraji, so did I find a brother and friend in Rajivji. The taste of chocolate that he used to thrust into
my mouth on those exhilarating but busy, foodless, sleepless nights- when Rajivji worked with us shoulder to shoulder- are still distinct in
my memory.

My ideals and principles are mainly based on Nehruvian philosophy and way of thought, taught to me by my dear father Mullappally Gopalan,
a veteran freedom fighter who willingly sacrificed all his material wealth and his own health for the cause of the nation.
My father has instilled in me the qualities of Truthfulness, nonviolence and Patriotism, for which I am ever grateful and to this day
I believe 'Nothing wins like Truth does'.
